What are Routine Dental Checkups?
First Welcome and Registration:
During your clinic visit, you will first be greeted by the receptionist. Your personal information and health history will be taken. X-rays will be taken, if not already done. X-rays examine the internal structure of your teeth and jawbones to help detect cavities, bone loss or other problems.
Detailed Dental Examination:
Your dentist will carefully examine your mouth and teeth. During this examination, they will look for tooth decay, gum disease, abrasions and other problems. The jaw tissues and salivary glands are also checked. Oral tissues are examined for early detection of oral cancers. Oral cancers diagnosed early can be treatable and life-saving.
How Often Should Teeth Cleaning Be Performed?
Scaling should usually be done once a year. However, your dentist may recommend more frequent cleanings depending on the state of your oral health. Regular cleanings keep your teeth free of plaque and tartar, prevent gum disease and protect your oral health.
Scaling: Plaque and calculus are removed using hand instruments or ultrasonic devices.
Removal of Plaque and Stains: Teeth are polished using a special paste and rotating brushes.
Use of Dental Floss: The spaces between the teeth are cleaned with dental floss.
Mental Hygiene Training: Your dentist will explain proper brushing and flossing techniques and how to choose and use products to protect your teeth.
Scaling gives your dentist more time for a thorough examination. An examination with a clean mouth helps your dentist to identify problems more easily and prepare the most appropriate treatment plan for you.
